What is Fringe?
It is the world’s LARGEST theatre festival, and it’s happening right here in Sault Ste Marie this August.
The history of Fringe begins in Scotland's capital city, Edinburgh in 1947. How it all started was a group of 8 theatre performers showed up uninvited, to the inaugural Edinburgh International Festival in 1947.They took to smaller, alternative venues and took advantage of the large crowds to showcase their own eccentric shows. Little did they know, they were the architects in establishing the very first ever, Fringe Festival.
From then on, it has become a stable to the theatre community and would become the world's largest arts festival. For Edinburgh’s Fringe Festival in 2018, it spanned 25 days and featured more than 55,000 performances of 3,548 different shows in 317 venues. It is an unjuried performing arts festival, meaning there is no selection committee, and anyone may participate, with any type of performanceThe official Fringe Programme categorises shows into sections for theatre, comedy, dance, physical theatre, circus, cabaret, children's shows, musicals, opera, music, spoken word, exhibitions and events.
To this day, Edinburgh is the largest Fringe Festival in the worldSault Ste. Marie will be participating in its third annual year of Fringe.
Everyone is invited to partake in this spectacular event!
