CROATIA REACHES HISTORIC FIRST WORLD CUP FINAL With an extra-time victory over England (2:1), Croatia secured the World Cup Final berth for the first time in history. The only thing standing between Croatia and its first title of world champions is the World Cup Final against France, which is scheduled on Sunday, 15 July at 17:00 CET, at Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow. "I think we still cannot quite grasp what we've accomplished. We're going to give our best and we'll do everything in our power to win in the final," said striker and the scorer of Croatia's winning goal against England Mario Mandžukić. "I've always said that this team has character and knows how to turn a game around, even after conceding a goal. The English said we were tired and spent, and yet they were the ones giving off that impression on the pitch. We've come to win the World Cup and we're writing history," stated Šime Vrsaljko.  "This is incredible, we still can't believe what we've done, and I hope we will do even more in the final. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Thank you to all of our fans for their support!", added Andrej Kramarić. Vatreni, congratulations! T-2 DAYS UNTIL CROATIA'S WORLD CUP SEMI-FINAL The Croatian national team beat World Cup hosts Russia in a 4:3 penalty shoot-out on July 7 in Sochi. The two teams proved to be difficult opponents for one another, with the first half-time ending with a draw (1:1). The second half-time passed without a goal by either side, and while Croatia took the lead in extended-time through a header by Domagoj Vida, Russia's Fernandes was quick to even the score in the 116th minute. Croatia's win over Russia follows a similar penalty shoot-out win over Denmark (3:2), with the winning penatly shot scored once again by vice-captain Ivan Rakitić. Head Coach Zlatko Dalić offered congratulations to the Russian team for "fighting bravely and staying true to their tireless, aggressive style of play". On his display of emotion after Rakitić's winning shot in the penalty shoot-outs, Dalić stated that he does not "cry very often, but now I had good reason to cry. We made both ourselves and everyone in Croatia happy. We supported each other mentally during the penalty shoot-outs and the tears were proof of how relieved I was in the end." Croatia captain Luka Modrić echoed Dalić's praise of the Russian team, stating that "Russia performed well. They are a powerful, organized team, and they prevented us from doing what we wanted during the first half-time. It was a tough match, we struggled, and fatigue played its part. However, we maintained our mental strength during the penalty shoot-out, and I hope we will perform better against England." The Croatian team is set to match strengths against England at Luzhniki Stadium on July 11, and if Dalić's squad takes the win, Croatia will make its historic inaugural performance in the World Cup final. EXCELLENT CROATIA STUNS ARGENTINA TO REACH ROUND OF 16! A beautiful Croatian evening in Nizhny Novgorod saw the Vatreni defeating the current World Cup runners-up, Argentina, with a three-goal margin. The first half was opened by Perišić, with Meza, Acuna, and Perez responding for Argentina - clipping the bar and missing the empty net following Croatia's defensive mistake. However, Croatia's defence managed to control Argentine forwards, and Rebić had an excellent opportunity to score in the closing minutes. Still, it remained goalless. Aguero was to open the second half with his effort, but it was Croatia who took the lead at 53 minutes in. Argentine goalie Caballero's blunder was punished by Rebić, who sent a stunning volley right on target. Later on, a joint effort by Subašić and Rakitić saved the day for Croatia, Mandžukić and Dybala fired off the target, while the Vatreni confirmed their victory in the final ten minutes. Captain Modrić beat Caballero from outside of the box and doubled the lead, with Rakitić hitting the woodwork only minutes afterwards. In added time, Kovačić was selfless to assist Rakitić for an easy tap-in (3:0).… more
